My Favorite Class At Bradley

Hi everyone! 

I hope everyone is hanging in there, especially during this time in the semester! 

I wanted to talk to you all today about my favorite class that I have taken while I have been here. I am currently a senior psychology major with minors in religious studies and management and leadership, however, my favorite class does not have anything to do with my current academic requirements aforementioned. 

My favorite class that I have taken here is one of my honors seminars named “Why Are We Here?” This happened to be the very first class I ever went to at Bradley, and it was at 8 am. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am NOT a morning person, and even worse, I was a commuter for my first two years here, so 8 am really meant a 6:45 am wake-up time. But, let me tell you, I did not ever regret getting up that early to attend that class, and honestly, it quickly became the highlight of my week. Me? Excited to wake up at 6:45? Pretty much unheard of. 

The class was about answering some of the tougher, broader questions like “Why are we here?” or “What is Love” or “What is the Value of a Liberal Arts education?” We essentially discussed and wrote short reflection papers on these topics and more, but having the chance to reflect on questions that we hear and think about so often was incredibly insightful and thought-provoking. As a new freshman, it was refreshing to hear my classmates and their opinions, and it was even more so interesting to listen to the co-instructers, Dr. Robert Prescott and Dr. Seth Katz. These men seemed to know about anything and everything, and whether they knew it or not, they completely changed my perspective on how I look at things. They’ve taught me that there is always a bigger message, a different perspective, and sometimes and most frustratingly, more than one right answer. It’s something I needed to learn and if I had the chance to sit through the class again, I’d take it in a heartbeat. 

Maybe it was the magic of it being my very first class or the fact that I was a freshman, but that class will always have a very special place in my heart. I hope that you all find a class that you love just as much as I loved this one or a set of classes to fall in love with while you’re in college. Sometimes, the best classes aren’t even the ones you were expecting to be great. In fact, I’m a firm believer that the best classes always end up being the ones that aren’t required for you at all 🙂
