Lazy days of summer?

I usually enjoy those lazy days of summer, but I don’t think I am going to see many of them on our campus this year!

Yes, the quad is much quieter than it was a few weeks ago, but May Interim classes are in full swing. The students stretched out on the benches are absorbing not only the sun - but also classwork as they study long hours each day during the shorter more intense May and summer terms.

Behind Westlake Hall and next to Haussler Hall, an amazing amount of work is going on. I can see dust clouds swirling across campus as huge pieces of Caterpillar equipment lay the groundwork for the new Markin Family Student Recreation Center. Workers are digging holes, moving mounds, and leveling the dirt and sand as they begin the work that will eventually transform the area that once housed the Haussler Pool and the Alumni Center into a splendid new recreation complex.

I know it is too early to start planning a ribbon cutting ceremony, but if they keep working this hard, we’ll be swimming and sweating in the new digs before you know it!

Flowers and Finals

On Wednesday, which was study day, the sun shone bright and students spread blankets out on the quad to study, soak up sun, and enjoy each other’s company.Yesterday and today, however, as final exams began, the quad thinned out as most students decided to go to the library for serious studying.Our recent warm weather has encouraged some wonderful blooms on campus. As students walk to exams, they can see purple iris, straight and tall, living up to their common name, “flags.”

Some purple and white columbine, which remind me of a walk in the woods, are blooming right at my feet.

In my day, peonies always signaled the coming of Memorial Day, as we would take them to the cemetery for decorations. Some wonderful rich pink ones are just starting to break into blossom at several places around the quad.

As students walk into Bradley Hall for their exams, they are greeted by the heavy perfume of abundant lilac bushes. Many people have commented that their lilacs didn’t bloom this year because of an ill-timed frost. But the ones here seem to be doing better than ever!

I am so glad that as students endure the stress of finals, they can enjoy the beauty and the aroma of the flowers that grace our campus.

The Lydia Awards!

As leaves start to appear on all of the trees and the grass turns emerald green, I begin to anticipate the arrival of the Lydia Awards!

Perhaps I am a bit biased, but I think the “Lydia’s” represent one of the most wonderful things about Bradley—an atmosphere of caring and camaraderie. Every year, each dorm’s Hall Council members submit bids to the Association of Residence Halls executive board to explain why they should win each coveted category. Honors are given for resident of the year, program of the year, hall with it all, and much more. These bids range from sentimental to downright comical, and the entire night brings a great deal of acclaim to Hall Council members who have worked very hard all year for their fellow students.

I see this benevolent nature shine through on the faces of ARH and Hall council members alike. The prize for winning a bid is the admiration of other hall councils, as well as a very handsome gold likeness of yours truly. University Hall captured the most statuettes this year. As you can see, the students had a lot of fun at the “Lydia’s” this year!

So until April rolls around again, Bradley students will be working diligently to try to bring home the gold next year.
