Homecoming Weekend

Hey everyone!

So Homecoming is over now, but it was a nice week/weekend of fun. On Thursday, my friends had everyone over to their place to hang out and relax since our Friday morning classes were cancelled due to the Founder’s Day celebration. So on Friday there was a celebration of Founder’s Day in Dingeldine Music Center, and then later on in the afternoon, Dingeldine also hosted six accomplished and distinguished women to come in to speak about their careers and answer questions from the audience. I went to hear the women speak and it was encouraging to know that women who were raising children also were able to have such great careers.

On Friday, there was a soccer and volleyball game. I went to the soccer game with my guy friends and it got kind of cold and we lost unfortunately but it was still fun to go. Actually, at half time two of my friends volunteered to participate in the half-time activity, so they had to race each other. It was funny because they had to race to put a sheet on a mattress — kind of random but amusing. After the game we went to eat at Steak n’ Shake to warm up and get some food. On Saturday I went with some other friends to the homecoming soccer game that night — and that night we won! It was an exciting game and a lot of fun. During the game they had the homecoming court come out and they crowned a king and queen. I didn’t even know who the people were though but oh well!

I’m glad I finally made it to some games this year though, and I’m excited to go see more of the soccer games and finally make it to some basketball games this winter when they start. I didn’t get to go to any last year but my friends have all said that they’re really really fun! So that’s something to look forward to.

Here are a bunch of photos from just a few of the homecoming events that took place if you want to take a look! - Kristin :)

Homecoming

Hey!

So BU’s homecoming began yesterday with a ceremonial lighting of the Bradley “B” atop Bradley Hall. I saw it sitting on top of Bradley Hall last night as I walked to Haussler Hall (our current sports/recreation center). Also while I was walking to Haussler, I saw a foam party in the quad that was hosted by one of the fraternities. And today, there is suppose to be a battle of the bands and homecoming bbq on the quad.

I’m excited because there’s a volleyball and soccer game both Friday and Saturday nights. I think I’m going to the soccer game both nights! I haven’t been able to go to any games this year yet, so I guess two in a row will make up for that. On Saturday, there’s a 5k in the morning, an opportunity to chat with President Glasser in the afternoon, a tour around campus pointing out new stuff being added, a tailgate before the soccer game at Shea stadium, and a movie on the quad to end the night at 10 p.m. That’s a lot of stuff. I won’t be able to make all of it because there’s so much going on, but at least I have a lot of events to pick from! It should be an eventful end of the week and weekend.

Busy time of year!

Heyyy guys

So a lot has been going on lately, and there’s about to be even more because it’s homecoming starting tomorrow! I’ve been taking a look at the schedule of events and there is soo much going on. I’ll update you later as the events start happening later this week.

But as I mentioned in my last blog, I went to see my friend’s band play Friday night in Lydia’s lounge. What I didn’t know is Friday was actually the opening of this new ‘cafe’ in Lydia’s lounge (the old U-hall cafeteria) that will be open from 8 to midnight on Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays. But anyway, The ‘Dirty Fools Project’ played for about an hour, and it was really really great! They played a cover of the Beatles at one point in the night, which was fantastic. My opinion is that you have to be careful with covering great bands like the Beatles in fear of ruining their awesomeness, but they did a good job! I really like their sound and enjoyed the music a lot, and I went with a bunch of my friends so it was really fun.

And then I went to the play on Sunday afternoon. It was really funny; I definitely laughed out loud several times. I liked that there was a lot of audience interaction, that’s the great thing about going to a play versus a movie. A few times they let down a big rope that some of the pirates and other cast members climbed onto and swung into the crowd, which was really fun because they came really close to the audience which made it kind of exciting. The stage and the whole auditorium was rather small, but I actually think that was a good thing, because the actors were sooo close. I could see their faces from a few feet away which was really cool to be so close to the actual scene. I got a schedule of all the other plays coming up this semester so I’m excited to see how the others ones are too!

I took a few pictures while I was watching the Dirty Fools Project on Friday night — take a look! The friend I know from the band is the lead singer, Danny. He’s got talent! And then there are some pics from the play too. - Kristin :)

Shack-a-thon!

Yesterday I came out of class and students were overtaking the quad. It was the yearly ‘Shack-a-thon,’ which is a philanthropy event for Habitat for Humanity. Basically the event entails groups from around campus who build shacks out of cardboard to support the efforts of Habitat forHumanity and try to raise money for the group. I think it mostly entails fraternities and sororities, but I saw some other groups out there too, like Student Senate and the Newman Center. Actually, I heard the Newman Center shack had managed to get electricity somehow and were playing Nintendo; I also saw a string of lights at the top of their shack as decoration. Pretty sophisticated stuff. Their shack was huge though! I’m pretty sure they had the biggest one. And one of my friends from Sigma Kappa I believe said that they somehow got a microwave in their shack and were planning on making popcorn later in the night. I thought that was pretty cool. So these groups built the shacks all day, and then stayed there all night. Not everyone stayed all night, but at least a few people from each shack did. Anyway, I think it’s cool that the groups on campus take their time to help a good cause like Habitat for Humanity. Nice job people! I have a few pictures of groups building their shacks yesterday afternoon. This was in the beginning so most of them are still pretty bare, but they’re gettin’ there! -Kristin :)

First official day of Fall!

Hi!

Today is the official start of Autumn! It really doesn’t feel like it though, the temperature is in the 80’s! Well, just at 80, but that’s still really warm for fall! But hey, at least the weather is not uncharacteristic in the sense that it’s too cold to be considered fall, that would be a lot worse. Anyway, a lot of people went home this last weekend for various reasons, including myself, so I wasn’t on campus all weekend. One of my friends went home to go to homecoming with his girlfriend from home, one went to work, and I just went to see my family! My sister was home so I thought it was a good weekend to go home so I could see her too (she lives in Chicago now and works full-time as a nurse). I heard that there were a bunch of fraternity parties over the weekend while I was gone. The new members of Greek life just got initiated a week or so ago so there’s been a lot of stuff going on since then over on Fredonia avenue where most of the Fraternity and Sorority houses are.

This Thursday, the first production of the year from the Theatre Department is beginning to have performances. It’s called, “Pirates of Penzance.” I actually have not made it to any of the theatre productions, so I’m excited to go and see what they’re all about. I’ve heard reviews from last year, however, and from what I hear there are some really talented people and the performances are great. So I will let you know how that goes once I go later this week or next week.

My friend is also in a band that plays around campus a lot, called “the Dirty Fools Project,” and they’re supposed to be playing this Friday at 8 p.m. in Lydia’s lounge, the old U-Hall cafeteria, so I’m going to hopefully check that out too.

Until the, enjoy the weather! -Kristin :)

the quad. beautiful weather :)
